College Street Bridge Construction

July 13th, 2009 by Keith Hutchinson

11-9-09 College Street Bridge:  The final section of bridge deck is scheduled for placement in November. Construction of the traffic circle will begin the week of November 9th, with a detour to be in place until the bridge is open.

The low-water crossing on Morrow Street and other sections of Morrow Street will remain open during the closure.

Project description

A new bridge over the San Gabriel River on the north end of College Street is now under construction. The Texas Department of Transportation is providing approximately $5 million in funding, and the City of Georgetown has provided approximately $500,000 in matching and engineering funds.

The new bridge will be downstream from the low-water crossing on Morrow Street in San Gabriel Park. Once the new bridge is complete, the low-water crossing will become part of the City’s hike and bike trail system.

My step-son and I play the 9-hole disc golf course probably four times a week. We also play Rivery’s 18-hole at least 3 times a week. I would like to see the new proposed positions of holes 1, 6, 7, 8, & 9! TXDot’s picture shows these new roads will be over the course. Do you have plans on re-planting these holes and t-boxes?

Concerned,
George Jackson

I also know of the Georgetown Disc Golf Club that plays every Thursday evening. That sometimes appears to be at least 12 people. I know of at least another 30 to 50 people who play out there on a regular basis.

Just thought I would throw this in.

Mr. Jackson

Thank you for contacting us regarding the San Gabriel Park Disc Golf Course. The 9 hole course will be realigned to accommodate the bridge. We do not have the new layout ready yet.

What are the city’s plans to limit the amount of motorized traffic that passes over College Street and over the planned bridge across the San Gabriel River? Guessing from the aerial photo this proposed bridge is only 200 feet from the low-water crossing. Since its location is much higher than the park, all the noise from traffic will be loud and clear to anyone enjoying the park below.

Are we thinking about a similar narrow width as the low-water crossing, speed bumps, rustic pavement? You should anticipate people taking advantage of an improved road to make a shortcut from the Southwestern University area to N. Austin Avenue, Crystal Knoll Terrace and Katy Crossing, avoiding the traffic lights. We need to be concerned not only of the noise and visual aesthetics of the new bridge, but also of the safety on all of College Street and River Haven Lane – in front of the nursing home.

Sincerely,
Leonard Van Gendt

The new two-lane bridge will be wider and safer than the current low-water crossing, and there will not be speed bumps. However, a traffic circle at one end of the bridge is designed as a traffic-calming element.

Keith,
I like the Idea of a new bridge and turning ht e old bridge into the Hike and bike trail. I ride both monutian bikes and Road bikes. We ride every Wdenesday from the park and have for over 9 years with a group of feinds. The sidewalk that runs to georgetown country club was actullay our old side trtack bike path.
There is one ite I would like you to consider there is a large group of folks that ride out to the country into the walburg area and on to granger that will be using the new bridge to get out of town . Your design has some concern since it will not have a good sholder for bikes. As you know there is an increasing number of rider in this area and I believed it needs to be considered in your design. Road bikes do not do well on paths as you know . It is a concern and I would like to to set up a time to see if some of the rider can meet with you to talk to you about this.

Why dont we just have the new bridge split at morrow and river haven ln

Currently, Morrow Street is primarily a roadway within San Gabriel Park that serves mixed use, conveying both park and through traffic. When the new bridge is constructed, Morrow will revert to serving primarily as a park road. By constructing the roundabout as opposed to some alternate geometry, traffic flow will be more efficiently separated between the park and through traffic. Thus, Morrow Street will serve park use traffic. Concurrently, the through traffic will be allowed a less restricted route over the bridge onto College Street along the south River bank and not through the park.

Joel, Bill, Mark:
Please advise me of the timing of the asphalt work on Del Webb Blvd. There has been nothing sent that I can find informing our 10,000 residents that use the road. They are going to be really upset if there is no announcement of the plans for the project. We have been informed that parking lots are being coated and of course Williams Dr. is about to go to paving now. Please be sure we are advised. If you have sent word to our Community Association let me know that. Thanks, Don
